Media Design Computing (MDI)

Media and computer science are omnipresent

Information technology is increasingly permeating our everyday lives and is omnipresent: Even people who are unfamiliar with technology should be able to deal with software systems in a playful and natural way. This results in new and higher demands on the ergonomics and user-friendliness of software: It should not only work, it should also be fun to use.

In addition to technical requirements, software systems must increasingly meet design and aesthetic demands: Attractive user interfaces and multimedia content such as images, video, audio and computer animations are playing an increasingly important role.

The new degree course in Media Design Computing builds a bridge between media design and computer science and brings together profound knowledge of methods and working methods from both fields. Media Design Computing is aimed at all those who aspire to IT studies that focus on both the design and programming of multimedia software systems.

Course contents

The course

The Bachelor's course in Media Design Computing leads to a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in a standard period of study of 7 semesters. With this degree, you are ideally prepared to enter professional life or to pursue a Master's degree.

During the first part of your studies, you will learn the basics of computer science and media design and acquire a sound knowledge of mathematics, programming, software engineering, animation and authoring systems. The content of this study phase is weighted 2/3 towards computer science and 1/3 towards media design.

The second study phase is characterised by increasing practical relevance and interdisciplinary characteristics. After you have gained further knowledge in the areas of computer graphics, mobile computing and usability, current questions from application and research are dealt with in practical projects.

During a practical semester or a semester abroad, you can make international contacts or gain insights into the working world and everyday life in a company. You complete your course with a Bachelor's thesis.

Skills in technology and design make you fit for new occupational fields

Technology is developing rapidly, and old media such as television, radio, newspapers and books are increasingly merging with the Internet. This will create new applications and markets in the next few years and thus new activities and occupational fields.

Therefore, IT specialists with solid expertise in media design and computer science are needed. For this reason, the Hochschule Hannover – University of Applied Sciences and Arts has created the innovative Media Design Computing degree course specifically for this purpose. Those who want to combine technical competences in computer science with the design principles of media design for the development of websites, apps, games or interactive applications will find what they are looking for in this degree course.

Creative systematics

Creativity and systematics are not mutually exclusive; on the contrary, they inspire each other. Hochschule Hannover – University of Applied Sciences and Arts would like to respond to this aspect with the new Media Design Computing degree course, which is offered jointly by the Design and Media (Faculty III) and Computer Science (Faculty IV) departments.

Media productions are team projects. The diversity of digital media requires a strongly interdisciplinary education of the professionals involved. For a convincing end result, designers with computer science skills and computer scientists with design skills are needed. The graduates of our degree course, which is unparalleled nationwide in this orientation, bring with them the sought-after mixture of creativity and systematics.

The Media Design Computing degree course imparts interdisciplinary knowledge in both areas. Due to its focus on the combination of media, design and computer science, it offers a broad basis and thus good prospects on the future job market. Studying across subject boundaries opens up new ways of thinking and perspectives and enables the training of both technical-scientific and artistic-design skills.

Application-oriented interdisciplinarity with a future

In our degree course, you learn in a project-oriented way: Already in the first semester, you work on your own project in a small team.

From the third semester onwards, you will carry out several practical projects together with computer science and design students. You will benefit from the numerous cooperations of the degree courses Media Design and Applied Computer Science with renowned partners, such as various museums, the Lower Saxony Parliament, the Schauspielhaus Hannover, Continental AG, Mast Jägermeister AG and Ambient Entertainment GmbH & Co. KG.

The Media Design Computing degree course opens up future-oriented professional contacts for you while you are still studying.

Overseas experience and practical phase

The 5th semester offers a mobility window that can be used for a stay abroad. During this semester, students can choose between a practical phase or a phase abroad, which is followed up by a seminar.

The phase abroad consists of a semester abroad, which can be carried out at a partner university (e.g. via ERASMUS+) or at a university of one's own choice. Courses to the extent of 20 ECTS credits must be taken, which can be chosen freely as far as possible, taking into account the level and subject reference.

The alternative practical phase of 15 weeks can be completed in a company in Germany, but also abroad. It offers the opportunity to gain insight into future fields of work.
